Within walking distance from Fudan University, one of China’s most respected institutions of higher learning, we find the embodiment of Pedro Garcia’s vision—to bring quality, authentic Mexican food to Shanghai at exceptional value.
Rather than focusing on mariachi bands and mind-blowing aesthetics, El Mexicano takes the form of a warm and pleasant cantina catering to both students and many of the locals in the area. With an array of sizzling fare ranging from 10–40 RMB this is a can’t-miss place to satisfy your cravings for heartily stuffed burritos, spicy enchiladas, carnitas, tacos, quesadillas, and nachos with a variety of fresh salsas.
Overall, the food retains its authenticity and is most definitely a cut above the average Mexican fare found elsewhere in Shanghai with its shockingly low prices. Additionally, El Mexicano recently opened a second branch on Hongmei Lu for those on the west side of town. Delivery is also available in most locations in Shanghai and their website has a feature to order directly online, so there’s no need to pick up those phones.
If you are looking for a casual night out for an authentic Mexican meal while minimizing the damage to your wallet, or if you need an urgent burrito infusion delivered straight to your door, I highly recommend you hit up El Mexicano. ✖
