This guy’s so funny.
That girl’s really cute!
Have you met this new guy?
Did you read her blog?
These are topics we talk about every time we attend a party, gather for a drink, or go to dinner with fellow members of Shanghai Stuff. So one day I thought we should celebrate our membership, have a party and give some awards. With encouragement and help from my SS friends, categories were set, votes received, and awards prepared. On June 26, 2010 at Servus Vienna, the 1st Shanghai Stuff Awards was born.
Paul’s Log
Friday June 18. I get an e-mail from Chichi. He needs to fly back to the Philippines the following week, so he cannot be the host of the event. My body freezes. I need someone to replace him. I talk to the rest of guys helping me on the organization, and we all come to one name: Samba. Fortunately he accepts.
Saturday June 19. I am working on the presentation. My phone rings. Sarah (Miss Jones). I have a bad feeling. My spider sense was right: she can’t attend the party either. Frozen again. I start thinking I have a problem about getting frozen. But I can solve that later. Now I need another friend to replace Sarah. It has to be a lady… Grace (Oceanblue) is the one.
Sunday June 20. Grace and Chichi come to help me with the presentation and to paint the awards. We also prepare some other surprises for the party. Chichi will open and close the ceremony with a video.
Saturday June 26. After 2 weeks working hard on the event, the day has come. I check everything with Grace in the morning, so she knows all the details of the ceremony (not the winners… that I keep secret). Scripts are ready. The name of the winners in an envelope. Awards are painted. Time to go.
At Servus Vienna we are all sort of nervous. It is the first time we have had an event like that. Samba tells me how he will open the event. With a dance! He is very brave to do that in front of so many people. Afterwards, together with Grace they check their scripts, modify the text, adding some details. I need to talk to the guys who will present the different categories. As soon as they arrive, I explain to them how they have to do it: when they must go on stage, their order, how to read the nominees, etc. Just some short explanations so they follow the presentation. I am nervous, but enjoying the moment.
Some guys are having a light dinner. Some guys just talking. I just want to walk and drink some juice. My mouth is dry. The party is about to start. I can’t wait to push the button.
22:20. The event starts. Chichi’s video of introduction is playing. I knock on wood.
Samba and Grace are doing great! My nerves are a little more calmed now. Irene and Mike Quinn give the first 2 awards. Then will come Ray and Lelong, who introduces a new category, the Panda award. This is a good one! Unexpected.
After that, Eagle D comes on stage for his performance. Great one. And for me, it is time to relax a little more. Things are running fine. People seem to be having fun. I am backstage, I can hardly see them, but I can hear that they are having a nice time. I hear Lucrecia’s laugh, and Emily’s funny complaints.
Eagle D finishes, and it is now time for Karl and Daisy. They do amazingly. Two more awards are given, the party goes on. It is time now for Luca and Paula. Two half-Spanish members on stage. Grace gets her award for best events organizer, and Nerina as best newcomer. Nerina is really glad to get it, she feels really honored. Then comes my favorite part, a joke we made with Luca about how to become a superstar member in Shanghai Stuff. I can hear people laughing, and that really pleases me.
The rest of the awards are waiting. Tina and Grace Ji make a funny presentation for best party girl and party boy. These girls are great. Excelsis, who just accepted to accompany Meg to give the Bad Girl and Bad Boy awards (David was sick and could not attend) is doing superbly. Emily gets pissed off to get the Bad Girl award and threatens the audience. This proves people chose wisely. Then MeG performs a couple of songs. She wasn’t feeling well and I was afraid she would cancel her performance, but she is a great artist, and makes all the audience enjoy her singing. The Red Beat and MeG on the stage come to my mind. I miss that place.
Now comes the official bad couple in Shanghai Stuff. With the Star Wars Imperial March playing, Emily and K come to the stage. They make us laugh out loud with their comments. The best comes when Emily congratulates Daisy as the hottest girl, and K does the same to Luca as the hottest guy. And by that, I mean a kiss.
Last two awards. The event is coming to its end. Lucrecia and Judee come to stage. Girl of the year, and guy of the year. The last two figures, painted in pure fake gold are given. The party is over. Over? No! Chichi has something to say. We play the video we prepared. Chichi feels like he’s in hell for not attending the ceremony, but he invites everyone to meet him in heaven, at the next party: 10th of July, Hell & Heaven.
